Andrew Cuomo on Friday signed legislation banning the sale of new and used condoms after a state law that allows people to reuse or recycle them expired.
The law takes effect Dec. 15.
Cuomo’s announcement comes as the number of people who die from AIDS-related illnesses in New York has surpassed 4 million.
Cuomo says the new law will make the state safer by reducing the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.
The measure applies to any sale of a new or used condom, but does not require the product to be reusable or recyclable.
The governor says it will make New York more accessible for people to get the services they need to protect themselves from HIV and sexually transmitted infections.
