“It’s just as likely that you’ll be able to find a condom,” says Barbara Stegall, a professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder who studies condom use.
“But it’s much harder to find one that is actually going to be effective.”
There are two types of condoms: latex-based and silicone-based.
“Most people think of latex condoms as the best because they’re a lot softer,” says Steganell.
“In fact, it’s kind of like latex on steroids.
It’s just harder to get into.”
For the first time in a decade, researchers are looking at ways to develop new latex-containing condoms, which are usually made from polyester.
Researchers at Harvard University are working on a new material that will be thinner and easier to produce.
In the meantime, Stegalens team is continuing to refine the latex condom, which will help it stick to the body better.
“The real challenge is just making it that people want to use,” says John Coughlin, a condom researcher at the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence.
“I think there’s a lot of hope in that.
We’re working with other labs around the world to figure out what that is.”
