More than a quarter of Australians will get their first ever use of a skyn condoms by the end of the year, according to the first results from the National AIDS Trust.
It comes after the first annual national survey on condom use revealed more than half of the population is using them regularly.
The survey found about 14% of the 18- to 29-year-olds surveyed had used them, but a higher percentage of those over 30 had used the products.
It is estimated that about 4.7 million people around the world have used skyns condoms, and around 4.2 million Australians have.
The National AIDS Foundation said the figures were encouraging but they did not mean people were using the products regularly.
“This is a good thing, it’s a sign that people are starting to realise they can be healthier and safer using the condoms than they were before,” spokesman Tom Whitehead said.
“I think we all want to get rid of all the nasty things that are out there and we should be making sure that we’re doing that responsibly and getting these things to people who need them.” AAP/ABC
